CrossRoads – july 2006
We've got some blues players here!
Boney Fields' music is the dream come true of a blues feeling wrapped up in a selection of funky grooves adorned with powerful brass ornaments! The sexiness and soul of Boney's music is tantalizing and magical. The Paris-based American trumpet player and singer is the ringleader of a band of huge musical quality, all at the same time old-time friends and crafted musicians.
Boney's CD is an invitation to party, to let it all hang out in a joyful mix of music and dance, with a scent of sonic sensuality. The music creeps immediatly under the skin, its presence is powerful and sexy as a hot summer night.
Open to all sorts of musics, Boney has developed a very inspirational style, a soul stew mixed with sounds coming from the whole world and therefore terribly ahead of its time! Encompassing spirituals, funk, jazz and soul, this mix brings out the soul of the blues... « We Play The Blues » confirms that Boney's has reached yet another level of perfection, his whole band oozing from a sheer quality and himself ready to blow both his heart and his trumpet out to bring the blues at the heart of the party! Groove on...

The Boney Fields concert I went to see was the slap in the face of 2005 (in a good sense !). Here’s someone who knows what the word “Blues” means. Do not be surprised when he shouts out to the world in “We Play The Blues”! This music is coming out from the man’s every pore. In five years, Boney has built one of the best hard-working bands in the country, a groove machine made of six incredible musical personalities whose sole aim is to serve the music! This CD is a genuine ray of light. Boney Fields’ charisma is overwhelming, and his presence, both vocal and instrumental, is huge! This album, full of serenity and happiness is a real boost to me!

Three years after their previous release « Red Wolf » - also distributed by Nocturne - The Bone's Project are back in the limelight! But, God, how they were right to take their time! Most of the band's line up has remained the same, extensive touring enabling the band to gel even more together. The CD itself is a beautiful object, starting with the superb digipack case to the front cover illustration drawn once again by Densnake.
There are many different musical moods offered to us here. Boney Fields is at the helm of an impressive funk machine, with a very efficient brass section with tailor-made riffs and innovative arrangements.
The Bone's Project album is both eclectic and coherent and should meet its audience way beyond the funk-blues buffs.

As any other blues giant would have, the Chicago-born trumpet player and singer has put once again his name on the map for 2006, and in capital letters: with a cooool comic-style cover, here are 13 great tracks for a total playing time of over 70 minutes of music to be played at full volume with a string of world-class guests.
True to his nature – an unstoppable energy into an exceptional performer – Boney Fields sets the turntable on fire with songs as soulish and funky as ever. The brass parts gel perfectly with Boney's singing and trumpet playing, playing a blues filled with positive energy and joy of life. There are many gems on this album, such as the excellent « We Play The Blues », the powerful « Your Good Thing Is About To Run Out » with Lucky Peterson himself on lead guitar and « Don't Let It Get You Down », where Boney is crooning his way through the song. Make no mistake, there's nothing to bin on this CD! Just try this: Wait until dusk, then turn the stereo's volume up and listen to the scintillating horns or Jerry Leonide's keyboard work for instance... You'll be amazed. However, if there's ONE song really standing out for me, that'll be the classic « You Gotta Move ». This tremendous track is played by a fiery quartet of such caliber that I would have bought the whole album for this track only! Surely one of the CDs to put buy this year.

With its now legendary crew - A high-powered brass section supported by the tightest of rhythms sections - The Bone's Project latest album is just not another CD: it is one of the most accomplished collection of songs, carried both by unstoppable grooves and an sense of musicianship that could cause a snowman to melt from spontaneous combustion.
A lot of people expected the Bone's Project new album to be impressive and versatile. It's even more than that! Boney didn't stop at nothing to provide us with songs that could easily be considered as classics worth those written in their time by James Brown, Ray Charles or Maceo Parker! A true soul genius, he is taking The Bone's over the edge, up to another level, especially with songs such as « Don't Let It Get You Down », a tune that could fit in Stevie Wonder's own set list. There also are tunes like « We play the Blues », « Girl Insane » ou « Get up and stand out », tailor-designed to send any audience head over heels! Whether as a trumpet player or a vocalist, Boney is also making room to his accomplices in the well-titled « Revelation », where both mind-blowing bass player Mike Armoogum and sax player (and real-life muse) Nadège Dumas are revealing their extreme sense of musicianship.
Unquestionably, « We play the Blues » is bound to stand out from the rest of today's production. It should definitely help Boney Fields to get to the place he deserves among the best artists of contemporary African-American music. Radio and TV broadcasters should listen closely to such mass of talent and quality. 2006 should definitely be the year of Boney Fields & The Bone's Project! So Be It!

Boney Fields & The Bone's Project new album certainly is the most accomplished recorded by the band. It is a privilege to listen to a music of such quality: this CD simply is a musical treasure!
In fact, there's more than just excellent music captured in this album: more like a sense of musical brotherhood emanating from the band, a love and dedication for the music they're playing, like if they wished to offer to the listener an exceptional moment, which is clearly the case!
Boney's energy and presence combined to the Bone's Project's musical excellence - which has become the band's legendary trademark over the years – are giving to every single song of this CD a high-powered, magical quality.
Hail to the man and his crew for offering us nothing less than a gem, probably one of the best independent albums of 2006.
